I love to dig. Whenever Dude gives me one of those chewy things, or a bone, or sometimes a toy, even a shoe, I love to bury it in the yard. It takes me a while to find the perfect spot, so I trot through the yard, along the fence, beside the garden, under the deck, the usual path until I find the sweet spot. Dude gets kinda mad, especially if I dig in the garden. I try not to, but sometimes the earth smells sooo good and I know it will be soft and damp under my feet and on my nose. Can you dig it? I know I can.

The wind is high

You think I’d be used to the Kansas wind, especially in the spring. But it tosses my food bowl off the deck, swirls dust from the wheat field, and Mama Nat gets sick. Sigh. I usually hide in the garage. I like the cool of the concrete floor against my dusty fur. And I don’t have to worry about stuff blowing off Dude’s grill or tree seeds in my water. It blows my mind, this Kansas wind. Hope it stops soon.

I know that ev’ry little thing she does, she does for me. That’s my Mama Nat. When I’m with her I’m happy. Mama Nat says “ditto.” Cool.

I just found out that my friend, Shooter McGavin, has passed away. Gone to the Big Dog House. He’d been sick with cancer. But he fought bravely and long enough to meet the new addition to the McDonald household, Miss Gabby. I know they’ll miss him. We’ll all miss him. Mama Nat told me she’ll remember that Shooter loved to ride on a float in the swimming pool. Shooter’s dude would pull him along and around the pool.

Dog speed, Shooter McGavin. ‘Til we play again.

This is Mama Nat’s favorite song. Mine too. This Norah Jones is one smart lady. Listen closely. It’s a good story.

Dude and I discovered something yesterday while mowing. I love to walk behind Dude when he mows. The smells are overwhelming, the clippings stick to my feet, but I love when he says “Wanna mow, Rigby?” Yes, I do. My favorite game is to leave Dude a surprise in the fresh cut lawn. He hates it when I do that.

But yesterday we discovered some new friends in the yard. They are tucked away in a nest inside a big blue bucket that Dude stores his garden hose nozzles and soakers. He leaves it hanging next to the water faucet. I don’t think he’ll be using it for a while.

These are my new friends. I see their Mama fly back and forth, bringing them stuff. She sits on the rim of the bucket and chirps at me. She doesn’t need to worry. I’ll protect my little friends. I wonder what their names are? I hope they like to play, once they get out of that bucket.
